I just recieved word through a bulk email to the UofR students about 4 recent or past students that passed away recently. It was rather standard until I noticed the last name.

"Aaron Brock ’03 Eastman, died August 3rd at his home."

This is the man that Prof. Goluses sent me to when I first met with him about three years ago. He was finishing up his doctorate then, so I only studied with him for about 3-4 months. He moved back to Toronto to begin teaching there, and married a wonderful woman. I haven't heard much since then, other than updates now and then about concerts and such. He played with feeling and with absolute control. In a way he's kind of been my role-model for guitar playing for a number of years now. This sucks. I can only hope that he knew the Lord. *sigh*

I don't know how many of you (both of you) enjoy watching soccer, but I do. Today was the world cup final, between France and Italy. The game itself was well played and hard fought, being decided in penalty kicks after the score remained 1-1 after 2 hours of nearly non-stop playing. This post is about Zinedine Zidane, a player for the French National team for a number of years. He was with them when they wont he cup in 1998 and he played again today.

It's possible you will have already heard of how he headbutted a player with ten minutes to go in overtime, costing him his place in the rest of the game and possibly the win for his country. At first I was stunned, as it was completely contrary to everything I had heard of the man (a soccer player often compared to Ronaldhino (sp?)). This hit really did happen (click here for the complete snapshot). What you DONT hear about right now is why it happened, or about the unfortunate player that it happened to. I will say that I think it is dumb to throw away your career over a complete jerk who will always be a complete jerk.

Marco Materazzi is the one he nailed. Rumors are flying about him giving Zidane a titty-twister and racially slurring his sister, though after watching [DISCLAIMER: This video has rap playing behind it that contains racism and foul language. Either turn off the sound or don't watch the video.] this video (a collection of nasty plays made by Materazzi) I dont really care whether or not he insulted the sister. Materazzi was described in one place as an "animal" or "delinquent". Was it a smart thing to do? No. Did the guy deserve it? Most definitely.
